AN-124 Loading Up

Nano Air Vehicle...

The 'Nano Air Vehicle,' or NAV (R) is designed to carry interchangeable payload modules. Like the seeds of a silver maple tree (L) that it resembles, the single-winged device would pack a tiny two-stage rocket thruster along with telemetry, communications, navigation, imaging sensors and a power source. The keychain-sized device holds the potential to transmit data that could change the way the U.S. military and other users perform a range of critical missions, including homeland security, Lockheed Martin Corp. says. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A small plane crashed Friday onto Interstate 95 shortly after taking off, authorities said. Information on potential victims was not immediately available.

"Apparently it was leaving Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and it went down shortly after takeoff," said Fort Lauderdale spokesman Chaz Adams.

Adams said the plane was a twin-engine Beechcraft, but he did not have information on how many passengers were aboard.

"It's lying in one of the southbound lanes of I-95," Adams said.

Rescue officials were on the scene. The interstate was shut down after the crash, Adams said. (FOX NEWS)

Comment by Pete:
I was near this area when it happened. The plane was a Beechcraft H-18. Photos I saw on Channel 7 look a lot like the aircraft above that I shot landing in Miami a few months ago.

Update: I'm pretty sure now that the airplane pictured above is the the one that crashed, N123MD registered to Monarch Air Group. The Pilot Robert Robertson is one lucky guy. We wish him a speedy recovery....

Donald Trump's Private Boeing 727 Jet VP-BDJ

This is "The Donald's" private Boeing 727 landing in Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International airport back in March of 2007. Notice the registration is VP-BDJ. Which means that this aircraft is not registered in the United States. There's probably a tax reason for that, because I think the aircraft is based out of New York. Whatever the reason, this former Pan Am jet flies and therefore we like. Nice paint job by the way. Photo by Pete Alvarez.

Now in the Ghetto Flyers Store...

Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. (1905-1976) was a billionaire businessman, a pioneer of aviation and an award-winning film producer. He dabbled in politics. He developed the first "flying boat," the push-up bra and the automatic hospital bed. He was adept at turning his hobbies into lucrative industries. Yet, despite all of his successes, he had no true friends or family. In the 1950s he became a recluse and was plagued by debilitating obsessive-compulsive disorders. Eventually, Hughes signed over his many business ventures to trusted advisors. In April 1976, after many years of drug abuse, Hughes slipped into a coma and died en route to a Houston hospital. It was a sad end to the life of a man who had a developed an unrivalled business empire. This MPI original production takes a look at the rise and fall of the Hughes empire. Through the archival footage and interviews with the few people who had contact with him, unravel some of the mysteries surrounding one of the richest men of the 20th century.
